I think cuffs that are two inches or less look fine on jeans. Anything more than that makes me think the wrong inseam was purchased. Tailors can shorten jeans for less than $30. I think it’s a good investment.
I noticed you posted a few things the other day about tailoring your suits. As much as I would love to buy another slim fit suit, they seem ridiculously overpriced. My question to you is, do you suggest buying a regular suit and then having it tailored made to slim suit specifications?
In general, any suit you buy should be tailored to fit you better. A regular fit suit can be made slimmer, but it will be expensive. Make sure the shoulders fit above all. That is the most expensive fix at the tailor. The essentials procedures are
1. take in waist $45
2. taper pants $25
3. take in waist $25
Which brings you to $95. I’d also recommend
4. sleeves slimmed $25
5. adjust sleeve length $30
Now your up to $150.
Hopefully, you won’t have to take in the waist, taper the pant’s leg or slim the sleeves on a slim fit suit. Also, if you lucky, the pant’s waist and sleeve length will already be right. I’d always try to go with a slim fit suit if possible. Good luck.
$35 for a shoulder alteration? Hell, $75 for a shoulder alteration is still cheaper than the $90 I've paid (SMH, should've returned it). Good deal though.
I think it’s worth it, if the person knows what they’re doing. I had the shoulders taken in on my double breasted seersucker jacket. The lady didn’t know what she was doing and charged me accordingly, $50 or so. I thought I was getting a deal, but would have gladly paid $75 for a good job.
You said you had the shoulders taken in on two of the jackets—I assume you meant they were too big originally. I was under the impression this was a very difficult alteration to make. Was this a concern for your tailor? And if you don't mind me asking, was it expensive? I have a wool navy blazer that fits perfectly, except the shoulders are just a tiny bit too large. I'd love to have it fixed, but I don't know if that's feasible. Can you shed some light on this for me?
Yes, the shoulders were too big. He didn’t seem to mind doing the procedure. He has done a lot of quality work for me and has been in the business for 35 years, doing alterations and making garments from scratch. I trust him.
He’s a nice guy. We talk a lot. I actually meet his wife today. He knows I’m a high school math teacher i.e. not balling out of control. He’s only charging me $35 per jacket, but it should probably be more like $75 per jacket if not more. I have the price list of a tailor I use to use and he charged $90 and up for the same procedure and did crap work. You’ll have to check with your tailor, but it will most likely be pricey. Good luck.
